Founded in 2008, Airbnb, Inc. is a San Francisco-based American enterprise that operates a digital platform for lodging arrangements. The company was co-founded by Brian Chesky, Joe Gebbia, and Nathan Blecharczyk. Despite being the world's largest hospitality service, Airbnb owns no property; it functions as a broker, earning a commission on each booking facilitated through its marketplace. The concept originated when the founders offered an air mattress in their apartment for a bed-and-breakfast style stay to help cover rent, initially naming the venture AirBedandBreakfast. The name was formally abbreviated to Airbnb in 2009. By the following year, the team had grown to over 15 employees working from Chesky and Gebbia's apartment, leading Chesky to vacate his own room until the company secured its first official office. A significant milestone was reached in November 2010 with a $7.2 million funding round led by Greylock Partners. Today, Airbnb is recognized as an industry leader that has fundamentally transformed global practices for booking and offering accommodations.
Through its affiliate program, Airbnb enables major publishers to generate revenue by recommending new guests and hosts to the platform. There is no limit on the number of referrals one can make. Eligibility for this program requires a website with at least one million monthly visits. Publishers who do not meet this traffic threshold can still participate in the "Invite Friends" and "Refer A Host" initiatives. The main affiliate program is managed on the Impact network, while the other two referral options are integrated directly into Airbnb's website and mobile application.
Airbnb's "Invite Friends" program allows any user to invite others to join the service and earn travel credits. New users who sign up via a referral link receive a discount on their first home booking and a credit toward an experience. Once an invited friend completes their first qualifying stay or experience, the referrer earns Airbnb credit. These credits are valid for one year and can be applied toward future bookings, making it a beneficial way for users to help friends while securing discounts on their own travel.
The "Refer a Host" initiative provides users with an opportunity to earn cash rewards for introducing new hosts to the platform. A payment is issued after a referred host welcomes their first guest. Users can receive payments up to a specified limit, after which no further rewards are granted for additional referrals. Payment methods include direct bank transfer, PayPal, and a prepaid debit card option.
